The Kilkenny castle in the SE of town (over the River Nore) is an art treasure, dating back to 1172. The castle belonged to the Butler family and has now a nice portrait collection to visit,depicting all the members of the family. Walls are lively painted, ceilings moan with sculptures. Besides the Long Gallery, there is also an exhibition of contemporary art, free of charge. A tour of the castle costs 5 euros for adults, 2 for children.
